This June, 2011 Golf Magazine rated Blue Rock Golf Course as one of the top par-3 courses globally. Blue Rock was the only course named in the Northeast U.S. which makes it a must play while on Cape Cod. Other accolades most deserved have come from Sports Illustrated stating Blue Rock as “the country’s finest par three” and Golf Digest rating it as one of the top places to play. Locally, Blue Rock has received the Golden Sprinkler Award for conditions and services. Designed by Geoffrey Cornish the layout allows the golfer to use every club in his or her bag. Plus, there is a wonderful sense of serenity as you play this course for it is also recognized by the National Audubon Society. I, personally, love seeing the variety of birds, wild life, and plantings, especially the many flower gardens.

Aerial view of Blue Rock Golf Resort

Holes range from 103 to 255 yards from the blues with three sets of tees. Golfers can easily play 18 holes in less than four hours and are welcome to walk the course or take a cart. Four of the holes play over water. At the #9 signature hole the golfer has a wonderful view teeing off from the elevated green across the water to the kidney-shaped green guarded by two bunkers. If playing late in the day you will be cheered on by the croaking of the bullfrogs.

10th Hole at Blue Rock Golf Course

The fifth hole, the longest on the course, is a challenge to par due to a narrow fairway with out-of-bounds on the left to a vertical kidney-shaped green with two front bunkers. Only four men, one being my husband, and one woman have ever had holes-in-one on the fifth.

Not only are you going to enjoy your round but you will be impressed by the friendliness and service given to you. PGA Professional Patrick Fannon, Assistant Professional Marybeth Winslow and their staff of clerks, starters, and rangers are exceptional.

PGA Professional Patrick Fannon giving a golf lesson to a junior golfer

Blue Rock Golf Course also prides itself on golf events, taking care of those countless unseen details. Groups from 24- 72 guests are welcomed for golf and dining. For larger groups, golf-only packages are available.

The Resort

And for the traveling golfer, stay at the Blue Rock Golf Resort and also enjoy all the amenities at Blue Rock’s nearby sister resorts- the oceanfront Red Jacket Beach, Riviera, Blue Water and Green Harbor. At Blue Rock your dog is even welcome in building five.

With the weather forecast predicting more of the same dreary, overcast, and occasional rain on Cape Cod this spring, we were looking forward to making our way north for some warmth, perhaps even play golf in short sleeves! Just a three and one half hour drive took us to Woodstock, Vermont, considered the “prettiest small town in America.” In the heart of this community, facing the green, is the Woodstock Inn & Resort,a magnificent 142 guest room hotel with all the charm and friendliness of a small B&B. Entering the main lobby one’s eyes automatically focus on the 10 –foot fieldstone fireplace in the center. Off this area is a cozy library where coffee is served every morning and coffee, tea and homemade cookies are served every day at 4p.m. I overheard one gentleman say this room makes him feel he should take up chess!

Gary Hall Clubhouse from Lakeland #1

There was such a comfort to our room in the Tavern Wing with its wood burning fireplace, two winged back chairs with pillows, a luxurious king size mattress, Vermont original artwork, a marble bathroom with Vermont made bath amenities, plush bathrobes, plus all the modern conveniences of the flat screen tv, wireless high-speed Internet access, work area with desk, duel-line phones, and voicemail message systems.

The Golf Club #3

But we were here for the golf! So it was off (just a two minute drive away) to the site of the oldest golf course in Vermont, dating back to 1895. The Golf Club, an 18-hole course, was redesigned in the 1960s by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. There is a practice range, a practice green, a putting green, a fully equipped Pro Shop, electric golf carts, and a professional staff to provide instruction. On the second floor of the Club House there is a dining room, lounge, and ballroom with several decks overlooking the course for outdoor dining and cocktails during warm weather.

Highland #8 from Tee

We felt the course should be called “The Bridges” for there are wooden bridges crossing the water on more than a dozen holes. It features four sets of tees to challenge players of all abilities. With its wooded valley setting it was beautiful with all the new spring growth, but it must be spectacular in the fall season. The course also has six par threes which we called sneaky tough! I, personally, loved the third, par 4, for you play your first shot parallel to the rushing river, and then it is a dogleg left over the river to an elevated green surrounded by woodland and guarded on either front side by two large bunkers. Tom’s favorite will always be the seventeenth, par 4, for he scored an eagle from the 150 yard marker, and it was so much fun watching the ball disappear into the hole. We definitely would like to play this course again.

The Woodstock Inn & Resort has partnered with The Quechee Club, just a fifteen minute drive, to offer golf packages so you have the opportunity to play the two exclusively private championship golf courses designed by Geoffrey Cornish, The Lakeland and The Highland Courses, both with five sets of tees. We played The Lakeland Course that winds along the Ottauquechee River and Lake Pinneo. Before playing we took advantage of the driving range, the three putting greens, and the chipping area including bunkers. The Lakeland Course is most appropriately named for there is water on 17 of the 18 holes. It is mostly flat terrain with tight landing areas that demand accurate tee shots. On the third hole this tight landing area really comes into play for the gold. blue, and white tees have you shoot over the river to a very narrow fairway with woodland on the left and bunkers on the right. Then you cross the bridge and bear left to get to the very fair women’s red tees and fairway. At the 150 yard marker on the par 4 sixth hole we had a visitor, one not very shy but ancient turtle. On the back nine, the fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth holes are parallel to the lake. This is just a beautiful laid out course that you will want to play again, and then return during the fall season to play The Highland Course which provides scenic vistas along with 6,809 yards of demanding golf.

Couples Massage

After golf I had a 5p.m. appointment at Woodstock Inn’s new spa. This is the place that every golfer should visit. It is serene and sophisticated combining historic Vermont architecture with native building materials and natural lighting. Besides the soaring ceilings, and intimate cozy nooks there is an outdoor courtyard with hot tub, sauna, and resting area. I suggest using the steam room before your treatment, and I highly recommend the golfer’s delight massage.

Highland #12 from the tee

Over the weekend Tom and I also enjoyed wonderful, relaxed dining at the Woodstock Inn & Resort. Both mornings we had the breakfast buffet. The choices are unbelievable including any kind of omelet. The first morning Tom really wanted a waffle which was not on that day’s buffet, so he was able to order it. So he got to have what he really wanted which was real Vermont maple syrup! The first night we had dinner at The Red Rooster Restaurant. Tom’s steak was excellent and my salmon was perfect. The following evening we had a more causal meal at Richardson’s Tavern. Again, delicious food, great atmosphere, and wonderful service. I highly recommend the mac and cheese, Vermont cheese of course.

Woodstock, Vermont

Just before leaving this enchanting town we took a quick “on our own tour” of the downtown. Fantastic shops, especially a few vintage ones, and of course, we found an ice cream shop, The Mountain Creamery. Needed to share a banana split before the ride home!
